3D Mammography

3D Mammography is a state-of-the-art imaging equipment used to detect small and invasive cancers in breasts, which is particularly suitable for women with dense glandular breast tissues as it gives clearer diagnosis that can avoid false-positive alarm or repeat scans. Overseas proven records* show 3D mammogram has superior clinical performance to 2D mammogram alone as it can:

  • Detect 41% more invasive cancers1, and
  • Reduce false positive recalls by up to 40%2

Conventional or traditional mammogram takes breast image from two different angles whereas for 3D mammogram, the x-ray tube moves in a small arc (150) covering the breasts from various angles in less than four seconds and reconstruct them into three-dimensional composite images which are approved by the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for cancer detection and diagnosis3. Radiologists can reflect the breast in a very thin slice or layer by layer. 3D mammogram not only better differentiates cancer from overlying glandular tissues and accurately identify small and invasive cancers, it also enables radiologists to pinpoint the size, shape and location of breast abnormalities and the likelihood of detecting multiple breast tumours more accurately.

Most importantly, early detection of small breast cancers, which may be left undetected with conventional mammogram, can facilitate early management of patients as well as better clinical treatment.

Hologic Genius 3D Mammography
  • A Comfortable Care Experience
    • Minimal Compression
    • 4-second tomosynthesis scan time regardless of breast thickness. Compression automatically releases after fast, efficient imaging.
    • Anatomical Design to conforms to the contours of breast.

  • Simplified Procedures
    • Pinpoint lesions faster, with greater accuracy and in fewer X-ray exposures.
    • Shorter procedure time and reduced dose.
    • Simplify targeting of challenging lesions, such as those in the axilla or close to the chest wall.
    • Improve recall effectiveness, reduce the number of unnecessary biopsies.
    • Can go directly from 3D mammography to biopsy if needed.
The Procedure

The whole procedure is monitored by Radiology staff. You will stand in front of the 3D mammography machine. One of your breasts will be placed on a platform, pulled out and gradually pressed against by a flat plastic plate. Pressure is applied for a few seconds to spread out the breast tissue. Relax yourself with head rotates to one side. Back straight with tummy in and lean forward. You may feed slightly painful or discomfort during compression of the breasts, especially when performed in pre-menstrual period. But the process is absolutely important because it can improve image quality, increase the diagnostic accuracy and reduce radiation dose. Please inform radiographer if compression is found intolerable. The arm of 3D machine will move for a small arc above you from one side to the other. The pressure on your breast is released and the machine is repositioned to take another image from the side. The process will be repeated with the other breast.

How Long Does it Take?

The examination including preparation and adjustment takes approximately 30 minutes.

To Prepare for the Procedure
  • A written consent is required.
  • Abstaining from coffee or postponing the procedure to post-menstrual period to minimize the discomfort.
  • Inform radiological staff before the examination if you are or may be pregnant.
After the Procedure
  • Eat or drink as usual after the examination.
  • Ultrasound scan may be done if necessary.
