Bone Densitometry (DEXA)

Also known as Dual-energy X-ray Absorptiometry (DEXA), bone densitometry scan uses very low radiation x-ray beams to measure the density of mineral in bone and to evaluate bone density loss. The test is used to diagnose osteoporosis, a bone condition that develops as a result of calcium loss in bones, causing bones to become thinner and more prone to break. A DEXA scan can also be used to assess an individual risk for incurring fractures.

The Procedure

The process is fast, safe and involves very low radiation dose only. You will lie on an examination table. A movable arm will pass over your body and scan. Your bone density will be recorded and analyzed by the dedicated computer.

How Long Does it Take?

10-30 minutes in most cases.

To Prepare for the Procedure

On the day of the examination, you can eat or drink normally. However, you should not take calcium supplements for at least 24 hours before the examination.
Wear comfortable clothing that have no metal zippers, belts or buttons in abdominal or pelvic areas.
Bring alone with you, if any, previous x-ray films and bone density exam results for comparison.
You may be asked to remove jewellery, eye-glasses and metal objects that could interfere with the x-ray beam.

After the Procedure

Eat or drink as usual.
